9 Feb 2007, Submitted by Brian Jilg Microsoft Windows Home Server Microsoft announced at the 2007 CES show in Las Vegas, the forthcoming Windows Home Server. This is a product with the home user in mind that has multiple computers in their home. What this device will provide is a centralized storage place for all of your pictures, movies, music, and important documents. It also will be able to be backed up to ensure that data stays safe. But wait there is more! All of the desktops on the network running XP or Vista, will be automatically backed up as well. Sounds like it will do snapshots using Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service and copy that snapshot onto the server.. a la Ghost imaging...very slick indeed! What is neat about this is that it is a headless device, meaning you will not need a monitor nor a mouse or keyboard. You just plug it into your network, turn it on and connect to it using a web browser, much like configuring your wireless router. Also another feature that is cool about this product is that you will be able to remote into the server or your desktops at home if you are on the road. The interface is very wizard driven as well, much like Small Business Server 2003. This is an exciting product for the consumer and tons of third party applications will be coming out such as home automation software or home security software.. the possibilities are almost endless. Companies such as HP and AMD are already working to deliver the first production models in the 2nd Quarter of 2007. Should be interesting to see how they pitch them. I have been a fan of home servers for a long time, but that is only because I have had multiple systems. It is tough to keep pictures, music, and data organized when it is on multiple systems and you are not sure which one is the most recent. Without a system in place, soon you have chaos in your data. With a home server, it is all backed up in one spot and provided you do backups diligently, it should not be a problem. This device offers a lot of what Small Business Server 2003 offers but without the need of a full size server. Also it does not provide an email server to provide webmail access to all of your mail. It is a trade-off. If you run a small business out of your home, this could be a really great product! (Though really I would rather run Small Business Server because of the email functionality, network security, and network faxes.) - Reston, VA
