9 Nov. 2006 - Submitted by Brian Jilg SBS for the home? You have got to be kidding me right? Actually I am not. Let's think about this a bit. Running a server out of your home, seems overkill doesn't it? Well it does if you only have one computer, don't take digital pictures, don't download music from the internet and still use dial up. HELLO! A lot of us do have more than one computer, we take digital pictures that just get bigger with every new camera packed with more megapixels, and music we download from ITunes eats up drives. Dial up? Yeah.. right. That is a funny one. Well our data needs are growing and growing in the home. It gets difficult to keep track of all the videos we download from email and keep them straight. Maybe we have documents on our laptop and some on our desktop in the office. Plus our kids are surfing Myspace and other sites with nefarious characters. Wouldn't you like to be able to set time limits on their internet usage? Well centralization of data is a key concept in using SBS 2003 at home. You can store all of your documents in My Documents on the network. So when you log onto any system in your house, you will always have the same My Documents. Not only with files, but we can store email as well because SBS 2003 has Exchange Server built in. So now we can use Outlook on any computer in the house and see the same email no matter where we are! You can even access your email on the web! You can even connect to one of your computers at home if you are on the road with internet access and need to pull up a file to edit. It is easy to back up too.. get an external hard drive that you attach to the server and setup the backups to backup there. What makes SBS 2003 so great, is that it IS easy to administer. With some proper guidance you can have a network the Jones' will want to keep up with! There are many other great features to SBS 2003, but these are the keys I think to start with. --Reston, Va. |
